Poetry Instructor
Job Overview:
We are seeking a passionate, creative, and enthusiastic Poetry Instructor to join our after-school program for elementary-aged students. In this role, you will inspire young minds to explore the art of poetry, encouraging self-expression, creativity, and a love for language. You will create a supportive, fun, and inclusive learning environment where students can experiment with words, develop their writing skills, and build confidence in their artistic abilities. We’re seeking to hire for roles in multiple locations in Monterey County: Salinas, Soledad, Greenfield, and North Monterey County.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach Poetry Lessons: Utilize our provided curriculum & resources to deliver engaging and age-appropriate poetry lessons that introduce students to different forms of poetry, poetic devices, and creative writing techniques.
Foster Creativity and Expression: Encourage students to write and perform their own poems, helping them express their thoughts, feelings, and imaginations through words. Create opportunities for discovery by engaging with poetry books & videos. Support students in building their confidence and finding their unique voices.
Create a Positive Learning Environment: Maintain a welcoming, respectful, and safe environment where students feel comfortable sharing their work and ideas. Celebrate each student’s progress and creativity.
Incorporate Fun Activities: Use games, prompts, group exercises, and interactive activities to make learning about poetry fun and engaging. Help students explore poetry through visual art, music, or movement, when applicable.
Provide Individual Support: Offer personalized feedback and guidance to students as they develop their writing skills. Identify students who may need extra support and offer additional encouragement. Provide unique challenges and opportunities for students who excel.
Collaborate with Staff and Parents: Communicate regularly with the the lead teachers for the after-school program, our language arts director, and parents to track student progress and address any concerns.
Organize a Final Presentation: Facilitate a poetry reading event at the end of the term where students can showcase their work to their peers, parents, and community.
Qualifications:
Experience: Previous experience teaching or working with children, or experience teaching poetry or writing is highly desirable.
Education: The ideal candidate would be a current college student majoring in Education, English, Creative Writing, or a related field. This background is preferred, but not required. A passion for poetry and the arts is essential.

Compensation:
$20 – $25 hourly
